Reading: In Kindergarten, we follow the Lucy Calkins curriculum. It is a reading workshop model that allows time for direct instruction, time for practice both independently and with partners. It allows the kids to build on their skills by starting with books that they already know. By using "old favorites", the kids are able to then start recognizing words and build their confidence. This program creates strong readers from day 1 in Kindergarten!
Sight Words: In Kindergarten, the kids are expected to learn the Kindergarten sight words. This helps their reading and writing skills. We check these every month and send home flash cards to help the kids practice.
Writing: We use Lucy Calkins and supplemental materials for our writing curriculum. We create class books that are sent home with each child to read with family. We also do informational writing, opinion writing, and we create lots of stories. We work on three details or events to help develop our writing. You will be amazed at the writing the kids will do by the end of the year!
